Counselling for men: About me
Life outside of counselling
I understand how difficult it can be to navigate life’s challenges, both personally and professionally. With nearly two decades of experience in counselling and fifteen years of working in senior management roles, I have seen firsthand the impact that these challenges can have on individuals and organizations. That’s why I have dedicated my career to helping others overcome these difficulties and achieve their goals.
I have worked with various organisations to provide counselling and consultancy services, from NHS trusts and HM Prison Service to universities, charities, housing associations, Diocesan counselling services, and small and large companies.
I am proud to have published professional and academic articles, presented at national and international conferences, and been interviewed on TV and radio. I have also been part of a professional panel for The Guardian newspaper discussing workplace bullying.
Having experienced over two decades of marriage and family life, I understand how deeply personal issues can impact our professional lives and vice versa. That’s why I bring a compassionate approach to my work, helping individuals and organizations navigate complex challenges with empathy and understanding.
Together, we can work through these challenges and achieve a brighter future.
Counselling for men: About me
My approach to counselling
I am committed to placing you at the centre of the process. Treating you respectfully doesn’t mean mindlessly following a specific counselling guideline; it means having a deep philosophical and ethical commitment to understanding how I can best help you move forward.
Ways in which I help...
My Passion
A simple answer is: I want to work to build a world where people, especially men, are comfortable talking about their mental fitness.
Counselling is political (with a small ‘p’). Counselling does not happen in the isolated bubble of the counselling room; whatever we do in the counselling must fit and work with the client’s real world. Many people cannot access counselling because of the poor investment in mental health. I cannot help everyone directly, but I will provide self-care advice and direction to other sources of help. This website will be a source of access to my work and support for the wider community.
My Philosophy
If you want a deep answer to this question, then you can find it in the critical realist philosophy of Bernard Lonergan. There is more to come on this!!!
Why do I work the way I do?
Choosing the right counsellor is an important decision that requires a thoughtful and informed approach. As an online counsellor, I strive to help my clients understand my approach to counselling and the people who inspire me.
Reflecting on my journey, I look back on my first counselling and psychotherapy course with fondness. However, with each level of higher-level studies, my skills improved, and my understanding deepened. I learned to let go of control and trust in serendipity, allowing me to be more responsive to my clients’ needs.
Grounded counselling is based on psychological principles, blending sociology, philosophy, and theology with systems thinking and complexity theory. This approach reflects the real world outside the counselling room and allows clients to find a solution that works for them.
I have been inspired by many key academic figures, living and dead. However, every client has taught me something new about counselling and living.
Together, we can embark on a journey towards healing and growth.
